Reg, why did you rename the old Haight Theatre the Straight Theatre? Was this in any way a response to the previous owners showing gay films at the theatre?

Thanks,
Steven
14 October 2003 - Manhattan

Reggie's Comments   Hi Steve
As I recall coming up with a new name for the theater was a group project. After we couldn't come up with a good one Luther put forth the name Staight and we all agreed that was it. Beside sounding like Haight why else I'm not sure. I feel that the theaters previous history as a movie vaudaville house, a radio station for an Black Babtist Church, or gay theater was not a consideration in the naming. L&P

The Straight Theater lives! A few years ago, I went back to SF, back to the Haight, and looked for the Straight; It was gone; Thank you for your wonderful website; Just happened upon it because I was thinking about Joe Gostanian and the production of Julius Caesar he directed at the Straight, with all the togas made from Indian bedspreads; I did something backstage; exactly what escapes me;

After spending the summer of '66 in SF, I dropped out of school in Michigan and headed for the Haight in the spring of '67; I stayed in a crash-pad on Ashbury, around the corner from Haight St;, then later lived with a guy who had an apt; on Stanyan; Things are a bit hazy from that time;;;guess why; I did end up going to the SF School of Theatre Arts when Joe Gostanian took over there;

I wonder what happened to the people I knew in the Haight; Last names were irrelevant, or names were changed altogether; Thanks for bringing back an amazing time;;;and good luck with your book;

The 60's was like a gigantic party that never ended until the mid 70's; Well actually it really never ended; Because there's still alot of people who carry the hippie style; Take me and the people i hang around, like tiffany are stoners and always wearing tie-dye clothing; There are alot of people who would like for the 60's to still be here, or have lived in the 60's;I know I would have had a hell of a time being the person I'am growing up in the 60's; With all the bell bottoms, tie-dye, necklaces, & much more, there wouldn't have been anything to hold us back from being hippies!!!

hi
your website is a gold mine;
well i have a little question
do you know why people where using the v of the victory (with there finger)
as a peace symbol
well what does it means,where it comes from;;;
Please
I hope you have an answer
i really need it
thanks for all
19 August 2003 - france

Reggie's Comments   I have two old torn very large posters from 1967 showing a hand giving the V-sign with the fingers and hand facing out. This poster captured the peace sign being flashed. Although it was used during widespread antiwar protests it is hard to say where or who started it. Instead of flashing a circular sign for the hard to translate painted peace sign this one means the same as Victory for the cause of Peace similar to the phrase ”We Shall Overcome” popularized earlier during civil right protests. Emmett Grogan the most famous of the Haight Ashbury Diggers flashed the V sign backwards using the WWII British style while he and fellow Diggers exited City Hall after a victorious verdict in a hearing. When the picture hit the front page he explained that fingers turned around British style meant Fuck You! So pick your own interpretation. Love and Peace, Reg E

"Here, pidgie, pidgie, pidgie!" Wow, I didn't know that anyone else in the world knew anything about "Congress of Wonders!" I didn't even know there was another LP [Sophmoric, is it?]; Now my 21-year-old son is into it, and has been for years;

Reggie's Comments   I have made a search of my collection and came up empty. I checked my illustrated cataloge and found no such band on a handbill or poster. I will hear back if Luther and Brent recorded it. Can you narrow down the time or give the exact date of the band's appearance. Thanks for the note.

Nice web-site :-) Im Surfing the web looking for a hypnotic circle done in a light box, if anyone can assist or give me any advice, then I would be very grateful; I am designing my apartment around a 60`s psyceldelic theme; Chill Pod :-) Thanks

Reggie's Comments   Sorry about the delay geting back but I've been doing shows out of town. I can email an attachement of several moyer and optical patterns you seek. You could then mount it to the front of a box filled with blinking Christmas tree lights. By placing cut out objects and Gel among the flashing lights you will have created your own hypnotic light box. Hands Across the Water, Hands Across the SEE. L&P rew

Reg,
What a wonderful surprise to stumble into your website tonight; I lived in the Third Eye Bookstore and Commune across from the Straight Theater at 1669 Haight and spent MANY nights at the Straight doing good acid and drinking lots of red wine with Dr; Roland Ramsey; I have many fond memories of those times; I wish many days that I could go back and relive them all again; Too bad we all grow old and sometimes forget our youth and the wonderment it held for us; I would be VERY INTERESTED in the poster of the New Years Eve 1969 bash; PLEASE contact me about it; Thanks;
Peace and Love,

Thanks Reggie, for your response- and then reminding me how to find it! Wall clock faces, who'da thunk it? So- have you got any good suggestions about oils and colorings?? I've had a lot of fun with simple olive oil and water and food coloring;;; want to go more sophisticated;
24 April 2003 - Asheville, NC

Reggie's Comments   I have seen many things used for color and media. Heavy baby or mineral oil and rubbing alchol are two good ones. Dr Martin's inks were used by some artists. I used some compounds not readily available anymore. More information will appear on line later. L&P rew

I am looking for the glass plates used for liquid light shows; Where do I get a set that do not say pyrex on the bottom?? please, we like to have good entertainment out here in the woods;;;
11 April 2003 - Asheville, NC

Reggie's Comments   High Beam! thanks for the interest in that ol time light show. The "Crystal" dishes you seek, other than hand blown glass, are actually glass clock bezels made for institutional wall clocks. The best ones for us range from 6”-16” and fit into each other with flat or beveled bottoms depending on the effects required. GE, Westinghouse, and other major electrical manufactures who produce these clocks have distribution warehouses in most major urban centers and should have some in stock. Let me know if you find a stash on the Right Coast I am always looking for different ones. P& L ReW

I am very interested in your site; I am an archivist of the Haight-Ashbury and your site offers lots of new information that hasn't been mentioned before; I am in the initial stages of researching a book about the interface of gays and the counterculture in San Francisco in the late 1960's; I have met the Cockettes who have much to offer, being the most obvious dovetail of those burgeoning cultures; I have heard that the Straight Theater had something of a gay history; For instance, in the September 2, 1966 edition of the Oracle, there is an article, "Haight Theater Goes Straight" that reports the following: "The Haight Theater, a reliable landmark in the memories of older Haight-Ashbury residents and, as rumored, a one time haven for the 'Gay' types was transformed this spring from the "Holiness Church" into the Straight Theater--Environmental Theater of Light;" If anyone has any information of the gay history of the Straight Theater, or would like to comment on their attitudes/experiences of gays during that epoch, please contact me; You can be gay, straight, hippie, or otherwise -- I would be glad to hear from you; Also, I am interested to hear from anyone who remembers the Psychedellic Venus Church, a gay dance center in Berekely around the same time;

Thank you and warm regards,

Steven Palmer

As Winter deadens and the holiday season is here I am reminded of the 60’s values that promoted Peace and GoodWill; Our generation borrowed Ban the Bomb from the Beats then using a concept borrowed from Ghandi peacefully struggled along side our brothers and sisters for equal rights and finally against all odds peacefully demonstrated to the Stop the War; The power of Love as in “love thy brother” finally helped stop that no win war; Now the spinning sphere has brought back that unresolved belicose phase; “What goes round comes round” Grandma Stella used to say; Many truths from the 60’s still remain important even in today’s slick world; Old fashioned Teach ins and thorough discussions should still proceed any act of war; This latest war was set in slow motion long ago and seems to have become a reality without thorough public scrutiny followed by the peoples’ united voice; The reasoning process has been bypassed and suddenly we are besieged by hysterical saber rattling and concerted band wagoning; Is it now treasonous to question and exercise basic rights guaranteed long ago to all Americans? Many tired tactics like age old nativism, racism, and nationalism which manipulate public thought by using media and government regulations to strip citizens of their freedom and convince them to fight a foreign threat is used once again by "the few" in power to convince "The People" to forgo their own personal rights and interests and ignore the state of the economy; The taxpayer may once again have to pay in life, blood and money for the gains of only a powerful few;
Now is the Season for Prayer and a good time to apply the old fashioned values of Love and Goodwill toward all Mankind and heal the grave situation facing us in the coming New Year;
Love and Peace

I've just been looking over the Straight posters and was glad to see The Equinox of the Gods; That has to be the most insane gig the Congress ever played; Not only were all the grotesque actors from Kenneth's films there, but Anton Lavey in his long black cloak was in the balcony, shaking his head with disgust at Kenneth's technique; For a detailed description of the affair read the novel 'Resurrection' by Katharine Kerr, (my wife;)
