As the year closes I pause to reflect; Besides the history changing sneak attack leaving dead and devastated victims to memorialize I remember others, important to the scene, who have passed and deserve special mention; Ken Keasy American author extrodinare was easily one of the most influential forces in the 60’s; He tied the past to the future; His free thinking was unhampered by the usual constraints so it allowed him and countless others to soar above the commonplace ; He borrowed Neal Cassady from the dusty fifties making him current to the psychedelic 60’s as social commentator and Further driver; His merry pranksters assaulted society and themselves by challenging the cemented mores while Ken always fairly warned us to “Never trust a Prankster”; They called him 'Chief'; For decades now I thought he should have been ” Senator”;

I lived in the Haight in 1969; first on Fell Street, then on Shrader and Cole; It was indeed a magical time; I can't imagine the world happening like that again; The openness toward others, etc; The world is so different now that I have difficulty sometimes thinking that it really happened and wonder what happened to change everything so much; I remember the wonderful food co-op we belonged to; Sid and Dino and little Julliet,now grown-up, if you're out there 'hello', how is your life? To a time gone by!

The Straight on the Haight would like to commend original Straight Theater Crew Ginny Resner, a crusader for Families Against Mandatory Minimums and co:author of 'Shattered Lives' for her recogniton with a Citizen Action Award at the DRCnet Awards Banquet; The mention in the June 8 DRCNet newsletter #189 is as follows: The annual awards banquet This annual ceremony felt the most like the DPF conferences of the past; Activists such as Chris Conrad, Mikki Norris and Virginia Resner (authors of the book 'Shattered Lives'), Nora Callahan of the November Coalition and Randy Credico of the Kunstler Fund were recognized with the Robert Randall Citizen Action Award in the cause of drug policy reform;;;; We call The people who don't already to subscribe to DRCnet, A publication of Drug Reform Coordination Network which is dedicated to Raising Awareness of the Consequences of Drug Prohibition; This vital front line work of coordinating hard to find information and chronicle the work of activists is under financial strain at this time; It can be supported by logging onto http://www;drcnet;org/signup;html; Congratulations Again Ginny; Keep up the struggle; The tide is rising; Love and Peace, Reg

Here's a follow up story from the DRCnet I got in today's email highlighting The Straight's own Ginny Resner's new book: 6/13/01 Dear DRCNet subscriber: I'm writing today to ask your help for our organization and to let you know of a special offer DRCNet is making available to our supporters who decide to contribute to DRCNet by July 1st. Many of you are familiar with the book "Shattered Lives: Portraits From America's Drug War"; perhaps you even received your copy from us. The authors of "Shattered Lives" have now published "Human Rights and the US Drug War," a 70-page booklet with updates on well known cases, new victim cases and other information, all laid out in the context of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations and the Bill of Rights of the United States. We are offering "Human Rights and the Drug War" free to any of our supporters contributing $25 or more to DRCNet by July 1st." Support your brothers and sisters on the front line. |

I remember seeing a lot of bands at the Straight Theater, everything from the deafining 'Blue Cheer' to the blues of 'James Cotton'; I think I saw the 'Allmen Joys' there as well, they later became the 'Allman Bros; Band'; To be honest about it, a lot of shows that I saw there were when I was on a voyage through the cosmos, I've never been the same since one night there; For some reason I still have a warm place in my heart for the Straight Theater, I guess I always will; There was a lot of Love those few years, now look they want to televise an execution; This may sound weird to anyone that knows me, I think back on my years in the Haight as good ones, I would do it all again; Peace out my brothers and sisters, try and keep some love in your heart;

Our band,'Frumious Bandersnatch', had great times performing at the Straight Theater back in 1967; It was definitely a magical experience as our music leapt off the stage thru the audience and onto the light show covered walls; Love your web site too!

The 60's era was an era I would have liked to live in; I did a history project for my U;S; history class over Haight Ashbury, and I enjoyed every minute of it; If I could go back in time I would go to that place and time; I would also like to thank Reg for sending my group and me some things from the theater, that was so awesome;

A walk down memory lane; I hope that the Straight's parquet floor held up well; I still have a couple of pieces of that maple; I sure got tired of trying to shuck and jive the lumber rards out of materials; Nathan was a good teacher; I saw his Dad's mural up on Parnassus a couple of years ago; Wish I could have been more help in relocating it; How come you never mentioned the wedding of Goldfinger and what's her name; Country Joe played and I forget who else; Does anyone remember the Aries Birthday Party for Hillel, Steve and me?

Reggie's Comments
Zachime, foreman, led construction of the giant dancefloor built over the first 26 rows of seats in the Straight. He went on to direct building and stage managed the Sky River Rock and Lighter Than Air Festival outdoors in Sultan Washington Labor day weekend 1968. His smiling face and mop of shocking blond hair can be seen among the stills collected from "Sky River Rocks" by Reginald, stored on the Films page button along side my other films from the era. Good hearing from you Charlie. Love and Peace, REW |

We had a lot of fun creating the new look with added pages and hope that you are moved to write about your 60's memories and current realities; I have been hoping that a page like this will also help find old and new friends; The Artists, musicians, artisians, hip proprietors, and free thinkers from the old Haight; I need to interview people like artists Randy Salas, Terrie, Tad Hunter, Chris Bragga, and artisians like Nathan Zackhime, Brent Dangerfield Genius engineer and producer; We are in the process of adding sounds of the Era and would like any of the old bands like Mad River, Phoenix, Freedom Highway, to add audio files along with Frumious Bandersnatch, Sopwith Camel and Neil Cassidy and the Dead; The future will also bring new light on old history with issues that instead of going away are being reevaluated for the new millienium on a Button to be called "The Straight on The Haight" Random Chapters; Here is a place to bring up controversial subjects in a civilized way; Love Peace and Fun, Reg E
